The fall of Communism
Communist Bulgaria's off-limit luxury stores
-
Dossier index
Under Communism, the so-called foreign currency shops thrived in Bulgaria. They were one of the biggest examples of hypocrisy during the regime - stores where you could buy Western luxury goods but only if you could pay in US dollars.
And of course most Bulgarians could not.
Only highest ranking officials in the politburo could spend their foreign currency in these shops, along with diplomats and the few workers allowed to work overseas.
Over the years, most Bulgarians came to resent the Corecom stores.
